Hi Jenna

I'm not a doctor but I do have a qualification in respiratory medicine. My understanding is that some asthma is "exercise induced" and some isn't. Either way, exercise can cause wheezing in asthmatics. Generally, if you don't get worse with exercise and you aren't currently having an exacerbation (asthma episode), then that probably means you're better off exercising than not exercising. However, take your blue inhaler (or your combination inhaler) before starting exercise and keep it with you. Also, if you start feeling your chest get tight or wheezing, then you should probably stop exercising and take 4 puffs of your blue inhaler and discuss this with your doctor.

Dr Dan should be able to give you the official "line" on the answer to your question, as I am not qualified to give medical advice.

Hello Jenna,

Asthma and exercise is interesting. Theoretically, exercise should NOT trigger asthma symptoms as its generally environmental factors that cause asthma attacks. Generally health clubs are air conditioned, and I can honestly say I have never known anybody to have a TRUE asthma attack in the gym.

However, going out running in the wrong seasons can cause horrible asthma attacks. The fact is, exercise is good for you for a million reasons. Its not going to alter your body hypersensitivity to allergens or atopies that might trigger an asthma attack, but it will fundamentally improve overall respiratory function.

I hope this helps.
