How many grams of EAA should I take?

I'm going to add EAAs to my pre-workout shake. I was thinking about 5-10 grams.

I weigh about 75kg if that helps.

Hi Harry

Just for other readers, "EAAs" are Essential Amino Acids. They are the aminos you must have in your diet because the body cannot make them in adequate amounts to sustain your muscles and other organs. Also, included in the EAAs are the BCAAs.

The best study used only 6 grams. This was shown to increase the muscle-building process (called protein synthesis) during training and to a greater extent than taking the same EAAs after training. So that amount should be fine. I usually add 10 grams of hydrolysed whey protein.

So this strategy of taking EAAs before training not only starts the muscle-building process earlier during training (so the muscle will be growing and not shrinking during training) but it also (probably due to the increased blood flow during training) leads to a greater muscle-building response to training!

Two good EAA products are EAA Stack (by Universal Nutrition) and if you want a pill (although it's more expensive per serving), go with Amino Acid Prototype 216 by MuscleTech but probably most EAA products would have a similar amino acid composition and therefore also work well.

Thanks! Is it a good idea to take them before cardio as well?

Hello Harry,

This becomes and expense thing. When I was dieting and training twice a day, I took EAA's before weights and before my morning cardio. But that does get expensive, and probably the most important time to have them is before weights.
