Hi Deidre,

The answer depends upon his needs. If he lifts massive weights then you should get a gym-/commercial-quality one (Cybex, Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, etc - most would be appropriate). If he's just starting, then you may be fine with one of the lighter-duty products perhaps by York or Gold's Gym.

thanks Mark...he is a long time out of army so needs to start from scratch. I will def have a look at York or Golds-hoping I can repick your brains if it all gets too confusing!:)

Ensure that you buy one with the supports set wide enough apart. If you buy one with the supports too close together, when you take weight off one side of the barbell, it flips up in the air and can break your jaw! You may also want to ensure that you get one with an adjustable back support for incline presses. Other than those features, most of them will serve his needs.

Deidre, have you considered just using a swiss/fit ball instead of getting a bench? Advantage to this is that you can do your abs, lower back, legs all with one bit of equipment.
