Does creatine actually prevent muscle from being broken down?

Or is it just an energy based product?

Hello Mega Fitness,

Supplementation with creatine has been shown to result in greater increases in muscle mass and strength, with a accompanying decrease in myostatin levels. Decreasing myostatin and inhibiting its function by GASP-1, may play an important role in increasing muscle strength and mass with resistance training, but almost certainly leads to a reduced muscle breakdown. So yes, creatine probably does play a role at reducing muscle breakdown.

Speaking in strictly training terms.

Creatine has always played a major role in my diet and has continuously helped me build muscle mass and increase strength. The one thing I personally relied on creatine for was the ability to help me maintain my muscle mass and strength during a dieting phase.

Unfortunately some small amounts of mass reduction are inevitable but the added benefit of creatine play a major role in the prevention of muscle tissue break down.
