Which liquids, and what amounts of liquids are best?

does it matter what type of liquid I drink while exercising? I understand water is good, but sometimes another drink would be good. Also, does it matter whether I drink a lot at one time before exercising, or should I just drink small amounts throughout the exercise period

Hello Karen,

This is a trial and error situation. Rather than being scientific, I am going to be practical. The way I gauge my training fluid intake is as follows:

If I need to urinate during training, given I will have been before I start my session, I consider myself to have drank too much. So experience tells me that I can consume approximately 1L of fluids whilst training including my pre training hydrolysed protein + essential amino acids drink and that this is enough for me. Whilst training I drink water as I find this refreshing, and has the necessary affects of keeping me hydrated.

Post training, as long as my urine is running clear, I know I have optimised my fluid intake.

But grim to read, but experiment and see what levels of fluids work best for you. Remember the benefits of being hydrated, and therefore getting it right is really important.

You can also sip a carb drink and even add some whey protein and/or essential or branched chain amino acids to it if you are trying to gain muscle.
