I can't find any published studies on "caffeine and grip strength".

However, caffeine has been shown to increase exercise performance but mostly in endurance sports or activities. Although more and more studies are showing improvements in strength and muscle endurance. Caffeine also mobilizes fat out of the fat cells and makes it available to be burned at a greater rate for fuel.

However, when caffeine is consumed from coffee, the performance benefits are lost. It seems that some of the natural chemicals in coffee somehow block or interrupt the effects of caffeine.

So if you want the exercise performance benefits of caffeine, either drink several cups of tea (about 3 for an average-sized woman and 4 for an averaged-sized man) or take caffeine pills (100 to 200mg for women, 200 to 300 mg for men). You can take caffeine any time within about 3 hours of exercise (which comes in handy if you train at night and want to sleep) but you should probably take it about 30 minutes before exercise for best effects.
