When is the best time to take whey protein?

I have just bought some optimum nutrition hydro whey. When would be the best time to take it and also how much should i be taking in a day? I wake up around 5 in the morning but i cant do any training until around 5.30 on the afternoon.

Hello Tom,

I'm with Lee here, I do exactly that myself! And ON hydrowhey is a great choice. I have my first serving at about 5:30am to break the fast and to drive plenty of amino acids into my muscles first thing.

I then use it pre and post training just as Lee has said. I add essential amino acids to my pre training shake just to supplements the already good amounts of BCAA's in hydrowhey.

What are you currently training for?

You can take whey protein as the soul protein source in meals or snacks and take it before and after training or just use it once or twice per day to top up your total protein intake. It totally depends upon what foods you eat and your goals.

If you already get a decent-sized serving of good quality protein 4 or 5 times per day, then just take the whey before and after training (although Essential Amino Acids are the best choice just before training - see: Is it worth drinking a protein shake whilst I'm working out? for a totally geeky review of the reason you should take essential aminos before training).
