I have just started drinking milk again, and I feel bloated. Am I lactose intolerant?

Or am I just been a hypochondriac?

Hello Annabelle,

There is so much nonsense information out about lactose intolerance, so I think I will clear a few things up first.

True allergy to milk is very rare in adults, and this includes allergy to milk protein. When it comes to lactose intolerance, bloating, wind, pain could possibly be treated by consuming more dairy produce.

By keeping milk in your diet, you develop the ability to be tolerant to lactose. But cutting out milk can also lead to a lactose intolerance.

I suspect you have given yourself a lactose intolerance to a degree.

Peter,

Would you believe that in countries like South America, Africa and Asia, almost 50% of the population don't produce enough lactase to digest the lactose in milk. In UK adults, its probably less than 5%, and that's because in the UK you are exposed to milk all time time, in the above countries you are not. So the advice you have been given is great advice!

Hi Annabelle,

You can actually be properly diagnosed for lactose intolerance. It's just a simple breath test. So try and get referred by your doctor. Or you can take a lactase enzyme product that will break down the lactose for you if you're not producing enough of the enzyme.
