Do weights based classes such as body pump count as weights sessions?

So reading other questions, I get the importance of weight training with muscle groups, reps, rest, sets etc. So is body pump actually just a circuit with the benefits of circuit rather than weight training?

Not sure if I am explaining myself well here, I hope I am!?!

Yeah its definately a weight training session, you can count that as there is resistance, granted it is minimal however it is for a long period of time with added tempo which the instructor shouts out. Which you probably know anyway. So i would count that as a weights session, as all the Bodypump sessions are, are something called TUT sessions (Time under tension) The whole premise of bodypump is to do 5 minutes on a certain muscle group move on, with a minute of 4-4-2 tempo for example on squat, 4 seconds on the way down, 4 seconds isometric hold at the bottom and two seconds on the way back up, very good fat burning session.

However, don't make the same mistake as me..I thought i was clever being a reasonably experienced lifter (ego took over) put 20 kg on the bar.. damn was i struggling half way through..regretted it!

Summing up, brilliant for fat loss, great workout and Wow do you ache the days following if you are new to it.

Body pump is a great way for beginners or people with limited time to get a great total body workout.

Each muscle groupenis being put through ( as Dean mentioned) time under tension. Places the muscle group under this type of stress definentley counts as a weight training session with the added benefits of being motivated by your instructor, variable intensitys and ampping up your metabolism so you burn more calories meaning you become more defined and increased card fitness.

A great class to take to push yourself to your limits.

Hi Reecy,

If your goal is to get toned up, burn a lot of calories in a short time and get some cardiovascular benefits, the body pump is perfect. I think it's one of those "if you had to choose one type of exercise class"...this would be the one!

However, if you're looking to build muscle, then body pump could be used every four to six weeks but unless you have excellent genetics and build muscle easily, it won't lead to much muscle growth in the medium to longer term on its own.
