What is a safe body fat?

Seems to me these dudes on stage and in mags are often unhealthy with such a low body fat, correct me if I'm wrong?

Also, whats the deal with these crazy depletion's? They can't be good for you, right?

Keep in mind that these are competitors in competition shape. A week later, their physiques already can look different.
As for bodyfat, if you are a wrestler, boxer (weight class athletes), you're bottom bodyfat is 5%.
Somewhere around 2% is what you need for organs...

Hi Scott,

Yes, from a health perspective, it's not necessary to have such low body fat levels but getting in competition shape 3 or 4 times per year is probably not harmful if done correctly. If done with drugs and very sudden and extreme dietary practices, there is an element of risk.

Remember, compared to the 60% + of people who are overweight or obese, it's certainly more healthy to be excessively lean for 3 or 4 times a year than be too fat 24/7.

I actually feel pretty good when I'm at 5-7% body fat although there are sometimes issues with workout stamina and the occasional gut/GI issue if I get sloppy with my diet.
