What are your thoughts on high protein supplements for women?

I've just seen an advert for a protein supplement especially for women. The Company blurb says that it's "nutrition designed for active women".

It's called MP MaxelleTrue Diet - this is the Nutritional Information (Per 57g) :

CLA: 1.03 g
Calcium: 461 mg
Guarana: 342 mg
Green Tea Extract (40% Polyphenols): 114 mg
Total Caffeine: 86.6 mg
Bioperine: 5.7 mg
Chromium: 45.6 ug
Vitamin B12: 8.0 ug

Also provides per 57g:
Energy: 904.0kJ
Energy: 216.0Kcal
Protein (as-is): 36.3g
Carbohydrates: 8.4g
of which sugars: 3.1g
Fat: 4.2g
of which saturates: 0.4g
Dietary Fibre: 1.9g
Sodium: 86.0mg

I've read loads of reviews, but they're mostly about whether the flavours were liked, or not.
What I'd like to know is, if I buy this, is it REALLY better for a woman - or would any whey protein powder do?

Thank you,

Shazlyn

Hi Shazlyn

This question gives me an opportunity to point out a potential downfall of certain supplement ingredient combinations that not only most exercisers don't realize but most supplement researchers don't realize either!

But first the basics...

The most important part of this product, as you seem to suspect, is that you get the high whey protein intake in a low-carb, low calorie shake (and reduce your starchy and sugary carbs). We've talked about the well-researched effects of a higher protein diet on appetite, metabolic rate and maintenance of lean muscle when dieting.

I can't see the exact ingredient list but it is similar to other "Diet" Whey Protein formulas. This one could have higher fibre content and lower sugar content but it is not bad and will probably serve its purpose well.

The thing that most people don't realize is that combining green tea with milk protein (almost certainly casein and possibly whey protein also), makes the active polyphenols in the green tea ineffective (probably by binding them). So you're probably better having any kind of green tea product "before" you have you protein shake and that will give it time for most of the polyphenols to be absorbed before the protein gets into the gut.
