What do you think of this diet, it seems quiet extreme?

This links to a hardcore bodybuilding website called T-Nation - http://tiny.cc/sxa0n

Hello Mitchell,

I think my first observation here is that the website you have linked to is not one I would personally be extracting evidence based practice from, I believe it sits on the wrong side of the industry.

In terms of the diet in question, its pretty hardcore. Breaking it down for an average size male dieting, would look like this:

Mon-Fri
Fat 167g
Protein 220g
Carbohydrate 30g

Sat-Sun
Fat 80g
Protein 62g
Carbohydrate 375g

So this is basically a ketogenic diet. Using this diet you are actively encouraging your body to use fatty acids as an energy source and not carbohydrates, so you are promoting fat loss.

The diet mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fuelling brain function. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies.

My knowledge of this diet is mainly down to the fact it is sometimes used in children with epilepsy not responsive to modern therapies. In terms of bodybuilding, its not without its side effects. Its is a very hardcore diet, and one that from a medical point of view needs VERY close control.
