Is consuming Gluten good or bad?

I have heard from many people lately that gluten free diets are the way to go. While I don't eat much anyway since my carbs mostly consist of potatoes, oatmeal and brown rice, I cant help but wonder why gluten is so bad? I haven't been able to find any real research on it's negative or positive effects on the human body.

Approximately 1 out of every 133 Americans suffers from celiac disease, which causes the person to be unable to consume foods that contain gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. When a celiac disease victim eats gluten, their bodies produce antibodies that attack the intestine.

Celiac disease cases are increasing throughout the nation, especially in the elderly. Recent research is showing that even some people without celiac disease may have sensitivity to gluten. According to a study conducted in October 2010, approximately 18 million Americans suffer from gluten sensitivity.

“The epidemic of food-related ailments witnessed during the past 30 to 50 years is most likely due to environmental changes caused by humankind,” says Dr. Alessio Fasano, director of the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research which led the study.

Hello Mary,

I have to second Personal Trainer on what they said.

You have to remember that gluten was introduced very late in mans existence. Its not a required food stuff. The issue with gluten is the immune response it triggers. It contains a substance called gliadin that reacts with anti-endomysial antibodies to cause a loss of the cilia that line the small bowel. You can end up with symptoms as trivial as bloating, or as serious as anaemia and vitamin deficiencies.

It all comes down to what your particular system can tolerate. Most people will have no perceptible problems when consuming gluten but celiac sufferers and people who seem to react badly to gluten intake should obviously avoid it. Those with celiac will likely realize this fact quite quickly but those with an intolerance may never work out the cause of their bloating and stomach upset.

The best advice is that if you suspect that gluten may disagree with you, then try eliminating foods with gluten from your diet for a few weeks and see if you feel better. Then re-introduce those foods in fairly substantial quantities and if you don't notice any problems, then you have no intolerance to gluten. If you get bloated or upset stomach, etc, then you may well have an intolerance.
