Unless I am motivated I simply will not do it so can you suggest a competition I can enter or maybe even a style of training that challenges people. I have consider a martial arts specialty but I wouldn't know which one.

A style of training to try out is CrossFit.com. They offer some excellent workouts that are very challenging and a style that is very effective. Check them out my colleagues are obsessed with them.

I would have said exactly the same as Josh. Local charity type events are always a great start to fitness challenges, the reason being that by getting sponsorship, it serves as the "I have to do it" factor. This is where I would start.
When people are serious about these charity sporting challenges, it tends to progress. I have friends who do the Great North run in the UK every year without fail, with the plan to beat the previous years time.
Triathalons are also incredible events to target as they are so physically demanding and you have to be fit to compete and complete them. Triathletes also tend to aim for overseas competitions with the potential to progress to some of the famous ironman tournaments.
Crossfit is actually one of the first things that entered my head when I read your question - its very competitive, demanding but actually lots of fun. Its a worldwide phenomenon now with crossfit groups everywhere. If you have never heard of crossfit, take a look at this video, and please remember that these people didn't start out as athletes, many crossfitters are just everyday people who train in this adn become super fit athletes.
You mentioned martial arts, this is a fantastic and social way to get fit. I trained in kickboxing and really enjoyed the sheer level of fitness I gained from the training, as well as the excitement from sparing.
If you are a member of a health club, sometimes they have fitness competitions. If they do, why not enter. If they don't, what about having a chat with the health club manager.

I've done the FitBrit the last 3 years (I may be too busy to do it this year but last year I came in 12th in the country - out of over 4000 who entered. I can assure you that if you do well in the FitBrit, you will be in very good shape. It requires a bit of muscle strength, a great deal of muscle endurance (especially in the thighs) and crazy anaerobic fitness levels.
You start by rowing 500 meters on a rower at max tension, then 30 shoulder presses with 20 kgs, then 30 bunny hops over a bench, then 3 km bike ride (on a stationary bike), then 30 push ups, then 30 box jumps, then 30 squats with 20 kg and finally a 1 km run on the treadmill - all back-to-back with no breaks and against the clock...fastest person who does it all with good form wins. The women's is the same except with lighter weights and shorter distances.
So if you want a real challenge of all the aspects of fitness, this is one of the best!
