Do I need to take a break from creatine?

The brand I'm using at the moment states that I should take 5g a day as I'm over 75kg, for 8 weeks then take 4 weeks off. Is it safe to use everyday?

Hello David,

The school of thought on creatine has changed over the years. Mark Gilbert really is an expert on creatine and I know he will have a great answer for this question, but the fact is, there is no reason at all to take a break from creatine. It is a very safe, tried and tested product, and I am delighted that the healthcare industry is now adopting it more and more.

I personally don't believe that you need to load creatine, and I also don't believe you need as much as 5g per day. I use about 3g a day, every day, and certainly at your body weight I am sure that would be enough to keep you at an optimal level. I'm 85Kg by the way.

Yes, as Dr Dan has said, there is no longer a valid reason to discontinue creatine use, since there is no good evidence of any negative side effects despite hundreds of studies on tens of thousands of research subjects, numerous safety reviews, and millions of users.

Some people do prefer to load creatine (3-5 grams per day for the first 5 days and then one or two 3-5g servings per day for maintenance because they get the effects more quickly. Also, sometimes it makes sense to bump up your dosage to two servings per day or slightly larger servings for a few days just to top things up if you are in a heavy lifting stage or have some kind of competition coming up as this may improve results slightly.
