there are several types of sushi - some is vegetarian and so is mostly made up of rice with a bit of avocado or peppers, etc. So this kind of sushi will not be ideal for muscle gains unless you add a protein shake or some form of protein.

If you are having sushi with lots of salmon and other fish, it is an excellent way to get quality protein, essential fats, healthy vegetables and reasonably good carbs (although white rice is often "polished" and so much of the outer layer of the rice, which contains much of the fibre and other important nutrients, has been removed).

So except for the rice, fish sushi is overall quite a good source of the type of calories you need to build muscle. As a general rule, to build muscle, the most important thing is to eat enough total calories (and adequate protein obviously) to consistently gain weight.

Hello Troy,

A number of bodybuilders eat sushi a few times per week. I have read Phil Heath and Gunter Schlierkamp talking about there love of sushi, and they would have it as the post training meal.

I am a huge sushi fan. I was in California a month or so ago and I went to Matsuhisa in Beverley Hills. Absolutely incredible place, and I met Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. I digress, but I am a big sushi fan.
