What is the best time to do cardiovascular training for fat loss?

Hi. I want to lose some body fat but I hear so many different things such as first thing in the morning, and to take 2 grenade tablets and 5 BCAA's just before. Or do cardio in the evening? I want to try and retain as much muscle as possible. What would you suggest? Thanks

Firstly, the main thing is that you "do" the cardio and that at least one session per week is a HIIT session (which burns more calories during the session and continues to keep your metabolism elevated for much longer afterwards).

The morning is probably slightly preferential due to your low glycogen stores, which leaves your body little choice but to use more fat for fuel.

Before hitting the cardio, ensure you have whey protein, or even better hydrolysed whey protein or better still Essential Amino Acids...see - Better to do cardio training on an empty stomach? for the explanation.

Don't do cardio on an empty stomach, the research now shows protein pre-cardio is superior for fat burning (and also supports muscle growth and recovery and stops muscle breakdown).

What about brisk walking on an empty stomach right after you get up in the morning for fat loss? Or would you still want to have some whey and maybe a couple almonds? I do know that having carbs in the morning is not good for fat burning.

And aren't you suppose to wait until your cortisol levels have come down, which might take and hour or two upon waking, to consume even whey and BCAA's?

Hello Mitchell,

Debby you have actually raised an interesting question. Should you wait for cortisol levels to fall before doing cardio training in the mornings? I need to think about this myself.
