Would you advise Thermosurge by Met-RX?

Question for Dr Dan. I am thinking of using Thermosurge, but unfortunately I have been prescribed felodopine and enalapril. Am I able to safely use this product, and will there be any adverse side affects. Thanks. Andy.

Hello Andy,

Lets look at the main factors that influence blood pressure:

Rate of blood pumping
Volume of blood flow
Resistance to flow of blood
The viscosity of the blood

That said, if these are the predictors of blood pressure, if heart rate forms part of the equations for any of these, then it will have an influence. Check out the following equation:

Blood Pressure = Cardiac Output (Stroke Volume X Heart Rate) X Peripheral Resistance

So anything that increases your heart rate will increase your blood pressure especially if you have high blood pressure anyway because that implies there is a fundamental blood pressure control problem.

Guarana and caffeine are 2 of the ingredients of Thermosurge, and these 2 chemicals will increase your heart rate in order to raise your metabolic rate. That's not good in your instance.

Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker. To keep it simple, lets imply from this that felodipine in some way affects how calcium is used in your body. Would you believe that caffeine causes your body to excrete calcium in urine. I don't know that this would have an effect on the sensitivity of felodipine, but I'll put money that no one has investigated whether it does, and the negative effects of poor blood pressure control is not worth risking in my eyes.

Enalapril is an ACE-inhibitor. So basically it blocks angiotensin converting enzyme, which reduces the production of angiotensin II which leads to the kidneys excreting more water and sodium. There is therefore a risk that these drugs can drive up your potassium. Thermosurge contains dipotassium phosphate, so could potentially also lead to an increase in potassium which is not a good thing. I am speculating here, but the fact is there is no research on this.

Also, if the caffeine and guarana raise your heart rate, your body will lack the ability to counteract the rise because of the enalapril and felodipine which could make you feel light headed and even cause syncopal episodes.

Again, none of this is researched, I am simply speculating. My opinion is don't bother taking this fat burner. Do you need any advice on diet and exercise for fat loss, as I have to admit that whilst I have used fat burners in the past, I personally get really lean now without them.

Andy,

In dealing with your sweet tooth I have some very simple advice. What ever time of the day it is that you MOST crave something sweet, it doesn't matter when it is, just have 3 squares of something like 85-90% dark chocolate. Only 3 squares and only once a day.

Alternatively, you could think about some chocolate protein based deserts.

Example 1
150g low fat cottage cheese
half a table spoon of natural organic almond butter or natural crunchy peanut butter
1 scoop of chocolate whey protein such as chocolate flavour pharma whey by PhD
half a teaspoon of green and black dark chocolate cocoa powder
sprinkle of nutmeg and/or cinnamon
blend all these ingredients
let it cool in the fridge for an hour
ENJOY!

Example 2
mix a scoop of Optimum Nutrition chocolate flavour casein powder with cold water and shake it together
add a few ice cubes and put it in the freezer for 30 minutes

These are both desert tasting, but actually serve as great late night meals, and quench your sweet tooth/sugar craving.

The other thing you could try is at the times you are feeling like something sweet, drink a pint of ice cold water.

The whole diet and training sides of fat loss would be a great second question, but I hope I have helped towards the sweet tooth problem?
