Is it good to consume casein in the morning?

My shake contains some casein so just wondered if that was a good idea?

Hello Leona,

When you say the morning, I am assuming you mean as soon as you wake up? I would say no. Having slept for 8 hours or so and therefore fasted, your body will be craving protein and carbohydrates. The ideal protein to consume first thing would be one that absorbs nice and quickly, so something like whey protein or hydrolysed protein. Casein is slow to absorb because it almost curdles in your stomach slowing down its absorption. That's what makes it a great solution before you go to bed, as you have a constant steady release of protein through the night and so preventing muscle breakdown whilst you are sleeping.

I occasionally have a small amount of casein in the mornings if I suspect there may be a reason why I might not be able to get my next meal on time. Its rare, but its something I have to consider.

If your shake contains casein, it probably contains whey as well so your shake might be fine. What brand and shake is it?
