Can bowel habit affect fitness levels?

I'm serious so please don't see this as some sort of joke question.

Thanks

Hi Aaron,

Proper hydration and a good diet with adequate fibre should lead to regular bowl movements at normal intervals. If you are experiencing some kind of issue in this regard and it's not the result of diet or hydration, then you should probably discuss it with your doctor. So these factors affect your bowel habit more so than your bowel habit having an effect on your fitness.

I'm sure Dr. Dan will chime in and possibly have more insight into this...Dan...

Hello Aaron,

Interesting question, and its interesting because why are you constipated? Our busy, modern lifestyles may be responsible for most cases of constipation: not eating enough fibre or drinking enough water, not getting enough exercise, and not taking the time to respond to an unmistakable urge to defecate. Emotional and psychological problems can contribute to the problem. Persistent, chronic constipation may also be a symptom of more serious conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, colorectal cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, an under-active thyroid gland and depression.

All of the above will of course affect fitness levels because they all lead to a sub-optimal physical state and therefore sub-optimal condition to train and perform. You need to see a doctor, simple as!

I'm really pleased to see this question. I'm personally very interested in the health complaints of fit people, so thank you for posting this.

Thanks guys.

I have seen my doctor and have had investigations and I do not have cancer or IBD or anything serious. He says its likely IBS, and my thyroid is also normal.

So given this info Dan can you suggest any way that I could be helped?
