Can I build muscle and yet stay reasonably lean?

I know its a dilemma for many people, but what is the actual expert opinion on the topic?

Hello Andy,

Please take a look at this question which talks about diet to make good muscle gains:

How many EXTRA calories a day should I eat to bulk up?

So can you build muscle and stay lean? Well if you follow the sport of bodybuilding, you will probably note that many bodybuilders now are in relatively good shape all year round. Many bodybuilders even in growth stages still do cardio training with the view that it means they can keep there metabolism higher and eat more of the right sorts of food that will encourage muscle growth.

What I am saying is that whilst it would be wrong to believe you can stay ripped and still get bigger, I don't believe in this day in age you need to get "fat" to gain muscle.

Yes you can. I started my prep at 97kg, 9% bodyfat. I'm now 99kg, 7%BF.

It's all about the nutrient timing and the correct use of GH to liberate FFAs to use as energy to cover the 'calorific hole' you create by dieting.

In short, if you know what you are doing, you can use fat stores to provide the energy needed build muscle.

You also need to utilise insulin (I get mine from sugars) to protect against muscle catabolism during the fast. GH will 'override' the tendancy towards lipogenesis in the presence of insulin.
