how low should you go down when you squat?

I need to know what is the best possible way to squat. It is a lot of controversy on what is the best method to squat. If you go to low it is bad for the knee. If you don't go low enough you aren't doing it right. If you squat and sit down on a bench and come up you don't get a proper workout. Please help clear this up for me! Your advice is gold to me!! thanks

Hi Johnny,

No one knows if one will build more muscle. However, the box squat (where you sit down at the bottom) is a classic powerlifter technique for optimising form and power so as to max out your squat.

Going at least to parallel is probably as low as you need to go to get most or all of the strength and muscle-building benefits but going lower may activate the glues and adductors more so and so could add some muscle to your butt or inner thighs.

I don't think there's any good evidence that squatting ass to the grass is bad for knees.
