Are supplements worth spending my money on?

I am on a tight budget and supplements all seem to be so expensive (the ones that claim to work anyway). Surely all I need to do is eat chicken from a major supermarket chain and pasta and I'll get the same won't I?

Interesting question. There is no substitute to food, however supplements do have there place. For example, immediately after you have trained, do you think you could eat a chicken breast or a tin of tuna. I know I couldn't, so protein shakes here are really useful.

I work as a doctor, and to be able to go and eat a meal every few hours is really unrealistic. However, to knock a shake back is really easy.

When I want to put on some size, can I get huge servings of creatine from purely dietary sources. Well not enough to get the noticable effects I get with my training.

Are there any foods I could take that would give me the pre-training pump all these new pre-workout formulas give. I don't think so?

The fact is, supplements for me are really useful. I eat a great diet, but the addition of some shakes etc really gives me the edge for my training and muscle development.

That is a very general question and the answer is "it depends". If you just want to get in good shape and you have time to cook and prepare meals, you have enough knowledge about nutrition to prepare meals that contain enough of the nutrients required for optimum recovery, health, etc and your job/lifestyle allows you to do so, you can get great results with a well-planned diet.

However, I've worked with everyone from housewives to professional athletes and bodybuilders and I can tell you that the vast majority are lacking in at least one of these three capacities. How many people actually plan, cook, prepare, transport and store 5 to 7 quality, well-balanced meals per day?

More importantly, there are certain "proven" performance enhancers, fat burners and muscle builders. If you give two identical twins the same diet and training program but one twin gets creatine, caffeine, whey protein and other supplements at specific times and dosages, it is a fact that the twin who gets the supplements will both out-perform and out-grow the other.

A good example of how effective certain supplements can be is in the case of sprinters. If you were the number one Olympic sprinter in the world and you were foolish enough to come off creatine a month before a big race, you would risk going from winning the first place medal to possibly not even qualifying for the final race (perhaps Usain Bolt is dominant enough to still win gold but he is a remarkably exceptional athlete)!

So if you have a fairly busy life, can't cook, want the extra muscle-building or performance edge, you're going to want to use some supplements and the ones you choose will be dependant on your goals, your body size, your genetics (how easily you put on muscle, burn fat, etc) and your current diet.
