Does anyone know about CLA supplements?

I've just read an article about CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) supplements. It says that it can aid weight loss by inhibiting fat uptake and increasing the speed of fat burning.
Does anyone know about this - and if so, does it work? Has anyone tried it?

I'd love to know, as I'm doing my best to eat healthily and do exercise too, but anything extra that might help speed fat loss would be really great to know about!

There have been a number of studies that have looked at the effect of CLA on body composition, one in particular found an effective dose of 3.2g per day to have positive fat loss effects. Other studies have shown doses above this don't really produce any added benefits.

You can find the study here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17490954

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply - it's made me think that I'll possibly give the CLA a try.

I've been in "remission" from cancer for just over a year now, and, because I was so weak and unfit after my operation, I tried exercise (for the first time in my life!).
I've lost 4 stones so far, but have plateaued for ages trying to lose the last 1 stone.

I may as well try CLA now and see if it can help speed things up.

Thanks again,

Congratulations on the weight loss!
The finals bit is always a bit stubborn, but you've obviously conquered greater battles so i'm sure you'll do it.
What kind of exercise & diet are you following. I always think that using things like CLA are the last thing to do, after you've exhausted other avenues. Thinks like carb cycling, various cardio strategies, different weight training protocols etc can all help you break the plateau.

Hi Chris - again thank you for your advice!

I'm doing programmes worked out for me at the gym, and I follow those in rotation. I also try and fit in Spinning and Body Pump classes too.

Admittedly, I did struggle to stay with the healthy eating in the last few months (not helped by going on a cruise holiday a few weeks ago!).
I'm back on track now, sticking as far as possible to 1200 calories a day. I managed to lose a meagre 1lb last week, but it's a start. I feel as if I'm in the "zone" mentally now, whereas I'd lost it for a while.

So, as you've suggested, I'll carry on as I've been doing the last couple of weeks, and see if I can shift this last bit of fat without usuing the CLA.

Something I like to do for my clients is cycle calorie intake. On days where you are hitting the gym hard & exhausting yourself, the diet needs to have a little more calories, with a higher percentage coming from carbs for recovery. On days where you're not at the gym, where the body doesn't need the same level of calories, I lower the overall total of calories & also lower the amount of carbs for those days.
One of my online clients is currently using an Intermittent Fasting protocol, with an above maintenance intake on training days & below maintenance on rest days. In the 2 weeks he has been following it, he has maintained strength levels, muscle levels & reduced fat levels!

Thank you Samuel for the information.
I've decided to carry on with my programme as it is at the moment, and see if the advice and information from Cris is working.
If I'm finding that the fat loss is plateauing again, I'll possible give the CLA a try. At least now I know I won't see immediate results from it!
By the way, are there any side effects from taking it?
