Is there a relation between Atkins diet and fatty liver onset/progression?

Is it true that Atkins diet, especially the high protein and fat recommendations in the first 14 days of the diet, can increase your chances for fatty liver disease especially if someone already has an underlying liver disease? Do they have any relation at all?

Fatty liver disease is exactly what it sounds like. Fat accumulates on the liver and over time the excess fat cells replace healthy cells and can prevent the liver from functioning properly. Risk factors for fatty liver disease include obesity, high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels, and having diabetes.
I have not seen any data connecting the Atkins diet with an increased risk of fatty liver disease. However, it is recommended that individuals with the risk factors for fatty liver disease follow a diet that is low in saturated fat; something I believe isn’t recommended by Atkins. In addition, diabetes can lead to kidney disease, a condition where protein intake may be limited to prevent further kidney damage. I did come across some data suggesting that a high protein diet combined with weight loss can decrease the amount of fat deposits on the liver, but this diet consisted of lean protein sources.
My suggestion to anyone with any underlying health conditions is to speak with a qualified dietitian who can make appropriate dietary recommendations to help them accomplish their health goals, like weight loss, while taking into account their complete medication history.

Atkins could have a beneficial effect if you follow it strictly simply because following the Atkins diet usually leads to lower calorie intake, weight loss, lower triglyceride levels and therefore reduced fatty deposits in the liver. However, you are far better off on a high protein, moderate fat and carb diet (as opposed to the very high fat and restrictive Atkins Diet).
