I am a 46 year old woman and am slowly gaining weight, can you help?

Directed to Mark Gilbert.
Dear Mark,

I train most days, either a circuit/tabata or a run and some strengthening exercises. I am 46 and in good shape but over the last couple of years I seem to have a gained around 10lbs. I have three children and a husband to feed and we eat pretty healthily and I am not a big drinker at all, my downfall is a sweet tooth especially at around 4pm and I am aware that my monthly cycle effects me badly if I have been eating sugar so I really try not to. I am really keen to shift this weight before 10lbs becomes 15 and so on. I also don't want to 'diet', I grew up with an unhealthy relationship with food and have two daughters that I don't want to influence in terms of the 'dieting' yoyo. Just some really good sound advice would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Alexandra

Hi Alexandra,

All of the evidence these days very strongly suggests that the cause of weight / fat gain is excess sugar and starch and not enough protein intake. This same combination seems to contribute to increased risk of type II diabetes, heart disease, strokes and cancer. So the best thing you can do to moderate your risk of gaining more weight and improve your health is to decrease your starch and sugar intake, eat oily fish (or fish oil capsules if you don't eat fish) and eat more protein. If you make this kind of shift in your diet, studies show that you will have a higher metabolic rate and that you should find that you have fewer cravings for bad food.
