Hi there,
Rochelle here, I find myself checking this site again, I love all the info. I have another quick question; does anyone have any diet nutrition tips for an underactive thyroid?, I've gained 6and half stone over last couple years. I lost 3 stone in 2009 then re-gained it. I've cut out chocky and junk and trying to cut all sugar out but it's hard when it's even in cranberry juice. I can't eat soya products or nuts. My diet at moment is breaky - poridge weetabix or 2 boiled eggs snack fruit lunch tuna prawn chicken or turkey with salad or veg snack fruit then evening meal turkey or chicken and veg . I've not tried protein shakes yet, I use skimmed milk and honey (1table spoon) I'm thinking of cutting the skimmed milk out.
Thanks for any advice!

I don't think that there's any evidence of certain foods or diets being especially effective for hypothyroidism.
Advice from the Mayo Clinic (a highly respected research, education and medical care organization) recommends that you of course see your doctor and take any medication carefully as prescribed. Take it on an empty stomach (unless otherwise recommended by your doctor) and avoid eating the following foods and drugs three hours before and two hours after taking your thyroid drugs...
Walnuts
Soybean flour
Cottonseed meal
Iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron
Calcium supplements
Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium
Some ulcer medications, such as sucralfate (Carafate)
Some cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as cholestyramine and colestipol
As far as your diet, cranberry with no sugar added is quite low in calories. Also, instead of just cereal, eat a couple of eggs and a small amount of cereal - you should always have a good dose of protein in the morning. If you don't have time to cook eggs, find whey protein powder that you like and have that with your cereal. You could also add a protein shake to your fruit snacks and decrease the size of your main meals.
