Mark: I'm experiencing lower right side back pain after taking Anavar, could it be related?

Directed to Mark Gilbert.
Hi,

I have been taking Anavar for 6 weeks at 40mg each day. 3 days ago when I woke up in the morning developed a uncomfortable mild pain in my lower back on the right side. It almost feels like my lower back is pumped and I notice it a lot more when I am sitting down in a chair.

I have done some research on forums and this seems to be a common side effect with Anavar but no one seems to know what the pain is from. Some think it is from the kidneys but when you have back pain that is kidney related, it is either kidney stones, or a kidney infection.

Kidney stones are extremely painful, and my pain was a dull muscle ache type pain.

Pain due to kidney infection is also extremely painful, and accompanied by fever, blood in urine, frequent need to urinate, chills, etc. I have none of these symptoms, I feel totally fine.

I think if my kidneys were infected, failing, or having some sort of problem, lower back pain would not be the only symptom I would have.

Another source said it could be just back-pumps and it is commonly caused by AAS (mainly orals). The pain is caused by blood being pumped into your kidneys/lower back faster than it can escape (it isn't harmful to your health as far as we know, just a PITA). Same reason AAS cause calf-pumps and the like. Bulk taurine at 4-10g per day should help tremendously. Lower your Var dose until you can get the taurine.

But I have come off anavar for 2 days and the pain still persists. I have also have been taking milk thistle throughout the duration of the cycle.

Why do you think I am experiencing lower back pain? Do you think it is muscle related or is it to do with my kidney?

Hi Jay,

I've heard this complaint before with Anavar (and sometimes other oral steroids).

Steroids probably cause some stress to the kidney and several bodybuilders over the years have had kidney problems - like Flex Wheeler (needed a transplant), Sean Davis (transplant) and many others. There is also a well-documented stress on the liver.

I'm not a doctor and I'll see if I can get Dr Dan to answer this but if it is more in your back then that can be a sign of kidney problems but this kind of side effect from Anavar is probably not that likely. It could be your liver, which is on your right side but the pain would be more in your side than your back probably.

It is not a steroid-related pump because you get that in the lower middle of the back and usually only when doing deadlifts, certain back movements or squats.

Either way, you should not take any chances and see you doctor because the "Anavar" you were taking was almost certainly black market and it could be a different steroid, a different drug or it could be contaminated.
