Are there nutritional supplements designed specifically for women?

Are there nutritional supplements designed specifically for women?
If so, are they available in Canada and are they safe if you have eaten organic and natural products for 20 odd years?

Hi Rose,

Most products that work for men, work very similarly or the same for women. The obvious exception being for testosterone-boosting products and prohormones.

I don't know what your goals are but the most common sports supplements are protein powders (especially whey protein), which is not only safe but extremely healthy - see my article, http://fitnessinventor.com/articles/1025-whey-protein-a-true-miracle-food-part-3 and creatine. This is for increasing strength, exercise performance and muscle mass. When you get into fat burners and pre-workout products, they are safe as long as you stick to the legal ones, follow the directions and aren't sensitive to caffeine and other stimulants.

The controversial ingredient at the moment which hasn't been around long enough to be sure of its safety is geranium / DMAA / 1,3 dimethylamylamine and it can be found in both of these types of products so you may want to avoid these. I believe it is now illegal in Canada though.

It doesn't matter if you're used to eating organic and natural products. You can buy whey protein without any additives, so there is nothing in it that isn't in milk. Creatine is made synthetically but it is the identical molecule that is found naturally in meat and fish.

For other product categories and ingredients, feel free to ask me a new question about a specific product.
