Is it really necessary to eat every 2-3 hours? Bodybuilders/athletes are often talking about eating this frequently, saying that it keeps sugar levels constant & that you need to eat this frequently for amino acids intake.

Jamie has answered this question as you directed it to him. I would just add that as far as meal frequency goes, small meals often keeps you from getting cravings because you eat before you get hungry. Also this causes less dramatic spikes in the hormone insulin. Insulin causes increased hunger, stops fat burning in its tracks and also influences the storage of fat.
Meal frequency isn't the most important aspect of dieting successfully but it does help.
