Why is there not weight loss occuring when healthy lifestyle changes were made?

Hi

My uncle who is 16 stone and drinks beer went on a health kick 6 weeks ago. He lifts weights 4 times per week and has went from 4,000 calories per day down to 2,000 per day. On the scales he weighs the same, he has stopped drinking and takes creatine. Could there be a known reason why his weight has stayed the same?

Thanks.

Hi Quelly,

First, send my congratulations to your uncle for embarking on a healthier lifestyle!

Hmm... He hasn't lost any weight at all? My first question is, are you sure he's consuming 2000 cal/day? Sometimes when people start making lifestyle changes, they don't realize how many calories they're actually consuming. And without knowing are eating more calories than they think.

Is he weighing himself on the same scale at the same time of day? Are his pants fitting more loosely? If he's noticing that his clothes are fitting more loosely, then he's probably losing body fat while also increasing his muscle mass. So he's becoming healthier even if the scale isn't budging.

My last suggestion is to encourage your uncle to start doing some cardiovascular exercise. 150-200 min/wk of brisk walking will help increase his caloric expenditure to facilitate weight losd and help with controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure and risk of diabetes.

Weight loss is a slow process. But if his weight continues to stay the same despite continued lifestyle changes, he should really follow up with his doctor for further evaluation.

Hi Quelly,

Has he been doing any cv work as well as the weights?

He might of added muscle and dropped body fat.

As well as weighing himself get your uncle to take measurements of his waist to see if there is any difference on a weekly basis.

Also like Lauren said include some cv work if he's not doing any.
