Mark: Shredding Dieting 101, your thoughts?

Directed to Mark Gilbert.
Hi Mate,

I am wondering if you thought the following link http://mirinlifts.com/2011/05/12/56/ was a good way to work out calorie requirements and macros for bulking and/or cutting? It seems like it is an industry recognised standard. Thought I'd ask yourself as you seem to be the go to guy regarding nutrition.

Cheers mate, keep the good work :)

Kind regards

Hi Jake,

That's a great starting point and you will likely lose weight with that kind of program at first if you train intelligently. However, there are a few things...

1. I would only lose fat for the first 2 or 3 weeks on that program, then I'd hit a plateau. Also, that program makes the assumption that everyone will be able to accurately predict if they have a slow, medium or fast metabolism. I usually suggest people start by dropping about 500 calories of carbs and adding in lean protein. Then it is a matter of weighing yourself (always first thing in the morning after using the toilet) weekly and adjusting your intake. Also, you should be having cheat days or cheat meals.

2. The carb recommendation is a bit high for many people. I have to cycle between 100 and 250 grams of carbs, with more days being closer to the 100 grams (I'm in my mid 40s though and have to be a lot more strict than when I was younger and use a lot more tricks to get super lean).

So you can start with this recommendation but you will more than likely need to adjust unless you are doing huge amounts of cardio / HIIT / weight training and/or you have a naturally fast metabolism.
