Why am I getting an upset stomach after having whey or weight gainer?

Hello.

I am not allergic to milk or milk products at all. However I have used some whey proteins (i.e. maximuscle) and some weight gainers. Within an hour of consuming them, I develop a really upset stomach (whether with milk or water) and I feel bad for having wasted my money and plus it ruins my work out plans. Do you know why I might be developing these symptoms? How can I know which whey protein and or weight gainer would not give me this problem?

I hope I am not the only one with this problem.

Hello Vinnie,

I must admit that I have used weight gainers in the past I have suffered with terrible acid indigestion and heart burn. I can't tell you specifically why this is, maybe its the sheer calorie load, amount of fibre, who knows.

I tend to just stick to whey protein now, and as much as possible I use hydrolysed whey protein.

My initial advice to you would be to ask supplement stores/brands for a few samples to test to see if you are intolerant to them. When you find one that is right for you, stick with it.

Hello Dan,
Thanks for your reply.
I was not aware that I can get samples from the stores. I will go to GNC in London the next time I am there to get some.
Also I did say that it happens to me with whey proteins as well and not just weight gainers.

What is Hydrolysed Whey? Is it just when you have whey proteins with water?
Thanks again.

It's strange if you are getting these symptoms with all the fractions of whey!

Concentrate I always find affects my stomach.

Isolate I am often okay with.

Hydrosylate is where the proteins are hydrolysed to smaller peptides so they are absorbed faster. I have never had problems with this form of whey.

Ok Dan,

So you mean I can actually buy whey in hydrolysed form? Any brand you recommend/use?

Also what is whey protein and whey isolate?
Thank you.

Whey protein (which is what we are talking about here) comes in 3 forms:

1. Concentrate - Contains fat, cholesterol and carbohydrate (lactose). The compounds are more bioactive.

2. Isolate - Whey that has been processed to remove fat and lactose, and is less bioactive. Typically has a higher protein content by weight compared to concentrate.

3. Hydrosylates - Pre-digested/partially hydrolysed whey protein which is very easily absorbed.

Hydrolysed protein is the perfect post-training protein due to its speed of absorption which is exactly what you want after a work out. I also use a hydrolysed protein first thing in the morning as my body is craving protein having fasted all night.

Isolate is a good snack based protein. If you for example have a protein shake between breakfast and lunch, I would perhaps go for isolate as it absorbs a bit slower and gives you a more sustained protein release.
