Am I doing too much cardio to gain lean muscle mass?

Hi, Im 6'0 172lbs just getting back into training after a few months off. I am trying to add about 10lbs of lean muscle and am training 4-5 times a week. However I cycle to and from the gym, this is a 10 mile round trip. I cycle 5 miles there, do my workout and then cycle 5 miles back. I also cycle to work so some days when I can't do work and the gym in the same trip. I'm cycling 20 miles and doing a workout. Will this amount of cardio affect my ability to gain lean muscle?

Hi Gaz,

My question for you is, are you also doing a cardiovascular workout while at the gym, in addition to your cycling?

My suggestion is to consider your biking your cardiovascular workout for the day and focus on your resistance training while at the gym; this shouldn't significantly impact your ability to build lean muscle. However, if you add additional cardiovascular exercise in addition to your cycling while at the gym, you are increasing your risk of overtraining, and then, if this occurs, yes, the ability to build lean muscle mass will be impacted.

I hope this is helpful!

I really don't think so. You're not doing an excessive amount of cardiovascular exercise to result in overtraining, so you should be fine! Admittedly, I have a bike and have had too many close calls with it on the streets of Washington, DC to be brave enough to ride it regularly. I admire your courage to ride your bike so regularly!
