What is the truth about packaged food?

Are packaged foods really that bad? I know that the main types of packaged foods are bad for you but what about breaded chicken for example? And the packets of chicken you can keep in the fridge? I only wanted to know for an on the go snack and the protein in these types of foods.

Thanks!

Packaged foods would typically be thought of as "processed" foods. Processed foods may have added preservatives, salt, and/ or sugar. If those 3 items are in light quantity, you are probably ok with eating it.

Hi Mitch

It is usually better to get fresh food as nature intended. However, there are some exceptions. Some ready meals that are made of all natural ingredients, some juices and smoothies that are made and packaged very soon after the fruit was picked and many frozen foods that are flash frozen shortly after being picked may be as good or even have advantages over buying fresh produce...however, these are the exceptions.

Breaded chicken is absolutely fine if you are trying to maintain your weight or are bulking but the breading is just added starchy carbs, sodium and fat, which you wouldn't want to include in your diet if you were trying to get lean (or healthy).

If you're talking about the pre-cooked chicken, just check the label and make sure that it only has one or two grams of fat and carbs for every 25 grams of chicken. That way you avoid buying chicken with too much added water, soy protein, dextrose and other fillers and sauces that can be found in cheap chicken products.
