Should I train to failure for Hypertrophy?

I'm coming off an 8 week strength training cycle and moving back in to hypertrophy training in the new year. I'm really looking to focus on pure size and was just wondering if training to failure is necessary? I would normally go all out on each set, but I'm thinking of taking the weights down, getting in more volume (reps per set) and focussing on technique.

Hi Jordan,

Yes for hypertrophy training, the main differences are that you should take short rests between sets (about 45-60 seconds), focus more on form (so lighter weights) and generally more sets. It is good to go to failure from time to time depending on the type of program you are on and what kind of periodization strategy your are using. You have to find the intensity level that allows you to make progress without getting overtrained, burned out or injured and that is different for each person.
