What are the benefits of Zinc and Magnesium supplementation?

Is it true that Zinc increases Testosterone levels? What does Magnesium do in line with this because they are combined in supplement products?

Is it worth bothering with the money on them? Any side effects? I've heard people having sleep problems when on Z and M.

Cheers for the info in advance.

Hi Craig,

There was a study done about ten years ago on "ZMA" - zinc aspartate / monomethionine, magnesium aspartate and vitamin B6. The research did show increased testosterone levels (or "free" testosterone, or both) in American Football players. Probably most of this effect was the zinc because zinc has been shown in other studies to influence testosterone levels and the way testosterone communicates with the body's cells.

This supplement actually claims to improve sleep and that is why it is recommended that you take it before bed. The sleep effect is based upon some fairly weak research showing that magnesium may improve sleep. This supplement will probably work quite well in people who don't get enough zinc in their diets and may have a moderate effect in others also. I've never heard of it causing any sleep disturbances.
