When should you do cardio whilst cutting?

During a cut, is it best to do cardio after a weights session OR as far away from the weights session as possible e.g. cardio in the morning and weights at night.

Thank you!

Hello Harry,

Its a good question, and I'm with Dean on his answer.

Specifically why... It's do with the fact that in the morning, your glycogen levels are a lot lower which means your body will favour lipid oxidation. Now as you know from previous FI questions, no one advocates empty stomach cardio... so prior to morning cardio make sure you take in your essential amino acids, or branched chain amino acids. I would normally also have half a serving of hydrolysed protein, but that's up to you. As long as you get your BCAA's that' what matters!

Better to do cardio training on an empty stomach?

Me
Hey Dean, my preferred time of day would be in the morning. I do my weights in the afternoon. Cardio for me in the morning doesn't necessarily me doing it on an empty stomach though. I prefer to do it after eating so rather than exercising with low glyocgen levels and burning fat directly, I use the exercise to create a bigger deficit in calories.

Do you think this is still as effective?

...and thanks for the comment as well Dan :)

As Dan said it's lipid oxidation (those stubborn fat cells that we call a spare tyre) that people struggle with. Also as Dan suggested using BCAA's, EAA's and even his personal favourite Hydrolysed Whey which I advocate too, fantastic fast absorbing whey protein just to curb catabolism in the mornings, you would see better results doing so than eating, waiting for a period of time and then hitting the cardio. The idea is not to create a massive calorie deficit its to just create one, ideally around 500kcal, do that 7 days a week and you have 3500kcal which is 1lb of fat. You create a massive calorie deficit and you risk delving into your muscle mass for fuel.
