How can I speed up my metabolism?

Directed to Mark Gilbert.
I'm 21, I weigh around 10 stone and I'm 5.7. I exercise about 3-4 times a week usually to Jillian Michaels 30 day shred (circuit training) its only around 30 minutes long.

I eat healthy, mostly protein and very little carbohydrates. I always seem to be on a diet but never really lose weight. I usually have an omelette for breakfast (1 whole 2 whites), a ham salad for lunch no dressing, and grilled chicken and prawns for dinner.

Whenever I have more carbohydrate I just seem to bloat and feel sluggish. I know I'm going wrong here but have no idea where?

Hi Katie,

If that is literally all you eat (unless the servings are massive), then you'd be as lean as can be (and deficient in nutrients). So I doubt that is all of the food you eat. How about snacks, milk and sugar in coffee and tea, fruit juice, sauces on foods, etc?

If you send us a FULL typical day's food intake, then I'm happy to give you suggestions but studies have looked into this several times and subjects in studies who claim to eat very little virtually always are demonstrated to in fact eat quite a bit more than they report.

OK, as far as boosting your metabolism, the best thing to do is to increase your lean protein intake (especially whey protein) and decrease your sugary and starchy carb intake.

Next best move is to use a fat burner with green tea, caffeine and other "thermogenic" ingredients. Grenade is the best seller in the UK and probably the fastest-growing fat burner right now but if you can handle it, you may want to try one of the "geranium" products (with 1,3 dimethylamylamine / 1,3 dimethylpentylamine / methylhexanamine). It has not yet been established that these burn fat but there is good reason to believe that they do.

The only other way is to train INTENSELY and progressively more intensely and to take a protein supplement before training...both of these will cause you to burn lots of calories long after you have finished your training session.
