Are there any tips you can give for losing that last bit of body fat?

Directed to Dean Chamberlain.
Hi Dean,

Question about reducing body fat. I eat quite healthy, but I find it hard to lose that last bit of body fat. My BMI is around 22.5 and my weight stays pretty consistent (just over 13 stone and im 6ft 3" - 6ft 4").

For example, my lunch most days I have 2 chicken or tuna wraps, orange, nutri-grain bar, apple, banana, raisins and yoghurt. I try & space it out so I eat the apple and raisins at around 11 and the orange and the yoghurt around 4. I know fruit has a lot of sugar in it so could this be stopping me from reducing body fat? I do a fair amount of exercise (footy 3 times per week and gym usually 3 lunchtimes a week). Do you think I should change my diet to eat less fruit and more veg or do more cardio & gym work? Or both? Or maybe switch the fruit to eat a wider variety or fruit?

What would you suggest?

Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil,

The first thing I would ask is are you eating any other sources of sugar? How about easily-digested starches like bread, pastry, potatoes, corn, rice, pasta, etc? The reason I ask is that when someone wants to get past a sticking point and they are already pretty lean and they are exercising frequently, these are the first foods to remove from the diet. They're fine when eaten in reasonable amounts for normal people who simply want to maintain their body fat levels or lose a bit of fat but if you want to get really lean, they are the foods that should go first.

I would rather have you continue to eat the fruit because it has more healthy, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory nutrients in it than other sugary or starchy foods.

The reason to cut these foods is that carbs, calorie-for-calorie, make you more hungry and they stimulate insulin, which depresses the fat burning process.

The next foods to get rid of before you cut any fruit are any unhealthy fats, so eat lean cuts of meat and don't use any butter on anything.

If you hit another sticking point, you may want to slightly adjust down your serving sizes of fruit (still eat the same number of servings but smaller ones), especially the raisins as they are a very concentrated source of sugar and calories.

That's it Phil, Mark answered superbly, after all he is the nutrition expert. The only thing I'd add to that would be if you are doing steady pace cardio for your cardio sessions, contemplate incorporating HIIT instead. 1 minute fast 1 minute recovery period, see if this grouped with those nutritional tips from Mark can help you get that last bit off.

Let us know how you get on.
