Should I do any cardiovascualr training whilst trying to build mass?

I'm currently on a mass gain diet and training routine. I was just wondering should I do any cardiovascular at all?

I'm not talking loads, but I'm currently doing short runs ( 30-40 mins) on non weight days just to keep my appetite going and because I enjoy getting outside. I only run twice a week. Is this okay when trying to gain, or should I stop it completely?

Hi Paul,

If you can continue to gain muscle, whilst continuing to do the cardio then this will not only allow you to maintain better health and insulin function but it may also allow you to put on less of the fat that inevitably accompanies a gaining phase.

Generally, young, thin, active males will often have to cut out the cardio because they have enough trouble "out eating their metabolisms" as it is but if you can keep adding size along with doing cardio then this is preferable as long as it doesn't affect your recovery or lead to overtraining.

It's also important to do a moderate amount of cardiovascular exercises to allow your heart muscle to grow as you grow.

Otherwise your body will be growing and it will put extra pressure on your heart just as happens with overweight people.

I wouldn't worry too much about that Harry, as lifting causes growth of the heart muscles also although cardio training added in will certainly add to heart health and function.
