How much protein should I eat per day?

Hi. I would like to know how much Whey Protein should be consumed in a day to loose fat effectively and gain lean muscle mass?

Should one also take the same amount of protein on a non-workout day as on the workout day?

Thank you

Hi Shreemangal,

Your total protein intake should be at least 1 gram of protein per pound of your body weight when dieting. I would recommend at least two servings of whey protein per day - one in the morning before or with breakfast and one after training...or the second serving before lunch or dinner on non-training days. Many guys use more than this while dieting and that totally depends upon your preferences, your ability to prepare and carry around your meals, etc.

If you have whey shakes between or about 20 minutes before meals, it curbs your appetite, so you will find it easier to resist eating too much or foods that aren't "clean".

As long as the total grams of protein shakes and other protein adds up to equal or exceed your weight in pounds.

...and as far as protein intake on non-workout days, research shows that your muscle-building response to a workout can peak at about 24-hours after the training session and a particularly heavy session may take days to fully recover from, so eat the recommended amount of protein every day!

Thanks, this would really be helpful. I take Hydro Whey from "ON". One serving is 30 gms. So taking two scoops would make that 60 gms per day. However i weigh 86 kgs/189.2 lbs. and i am 6 feet/182.88 cms tall, so should i increase my intake of protein going according to the advisable intake of 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

Thank you

Hi Shreemangal

you have to look up the amount of protein in all of the other foods you eat and then add the protein from your protein shakes and this should add up to at least the 190 grams of protein you should be consuming daily.
