What foods contain oestrogen?

What foods contain oestrogen?

I've been told certain foods contain this and worried it may have bad effects to my mass building regime. If so what foods are to be avoided?

Hi Alec,

Some foods do contain estrogens or estrogen-like molecules that may have estrogen-like effects in the body.

The most obvious is soy. Not all studies concur but there has been quite a bit of research and individual case studies that seem to show that the "phytoestrogens" (plant estrogens) in soy can potentially have a feminizing effect in men.

A recent study showed that because milking cows are kept in virtual perpetual pregnancy, the milk they yield is high in estrogen and progesterone and this leads to increased levels of these hormones in men who drank a large serving of milk. The men also had reduced testosterone and LH. However, these hormones are contained in the fat, so low-fat milks and protein powders which have had almost all of the fat removed will not have any issues.

Some plastics from things like pop bottles and tupperware may give off estrogen-like molecules especially when heated. Look for non-BPA plastic containers!

Those are the main sources and I can't think of any other typical significant sources of estrogen in the diet at the moment.
