Hi Winnie,

Most people will tell you to keep your gym sessions to 45-60mins. After this time then testosterone production begins to decrease. This is also why you should perform cardio after a weights training session and not before (if you do both in the same session that is).

In addition glycogen reserves will start to be deplete and you will feel like you have less energy in the tank if you spend much longer in the gym than an hour.

Hope this helps.

Playing a little bit of Devils advocate here Scott let me just ask...... If we start to release cortisol after aprox 50-70 mins of high intensity work and start to convert into a catabolic state also depletion of glycogen at the muscular level then surely no workout should last for longer than 60-80 mins unless it's sport dependant?? cardio post high resistance a no-no??

Hi Liam,

I agree with you completely. I personally never do cardio in the same session as a weights session, nor do I recommend that my clients do that. The risk of catbolism outweighs the potential benefits in my opinion. My answer above said "if you perform both in the same session".
