Carbs and protein are 4 calories Per gram, fat is 9 calories per gram.

A calorie is a measure of energy and when we eat foods containing calories, they are what gives our bodies the energy to do things. Just as Mark mentioned, per gram, fat is more calorically dense than carbohydrate or protein. Remember we gain weight when we eat more calories than we use up and so therefore people who eat foods that are high in fat are more likely to gain weight because they will be consuming more calories than they would if they were eating the same volume of food but instead consisting of protein or carbohydrates.
