Is Milk Thistle a good additional supplement?

As we know, the liver plays a vital role in digestion, and the process of, and removal of toxins from the body...

It would make sense that ingesting large amounts of protein, supplements, vitamins and so on (like I do) could put quite a lot of a strain on the liver. Is Milk Thistle a supplement that you would recommend in order to help keep the liver healthy? I've always been rather sceptical of herbal supplements.

Thanks

Hi Josh,

A high-protein intake will not negatively impact the liver. In fact, studies show that giving protein supplements to patients with hepatic (liver) illness, actually improves their condition.

Vitamins and minerals in reasonable dosages from supplements are also unlikely to be harmful to the liver. It is possible to take in too much of the fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins D, E, A & K) and these can accumulate over time and cause various ailments including to the liver but as long as you make wise choices as far as which vitamin/mineral supplement you use, this won't be an issue.

Also, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is a superior liver-detox supplement to Milk Thistle. Surprisingly, drinking a lot of coffee (regular or decaff) and taking whey protein have also benn proven to be quite beneficial to liver health.

So 1. unless you are taking prohormones or some other kind of controversial supplement, you are unlikely to need a "liver cleansing" supplement and 2. if you did, milk thistle may be somewhat helpful but NAC, coffee and whey protein have a much more substantial body of research to show that they protect the liver.
