What is a good supplement stack for over 50 year olds?

I am commencing training and would like a good supplement stack for muscle gain and strength.

Hi Basil,

The recommendation shouldn't change much just because you're over 50 (I'm almost there myself!)...except that you can't really go crazy on the carbs like a young guy with a fast metabolism when trying to bulk and you have to be a little more patient.

The core supplements should be a protein powder (you can just eat lots of lean meat, fish and eggs but they take a lot longer to prepare, aren't as high-quality protein, and won't have as many health benefits as a whey protein supplement), along with creatine monohydrate and perhaps a good pre-workout product for more energy, blood flow and a better pump when training.

You can take your creatine with a scoop of whey protein and 35 grams of maltodextrin or dextrose or waxy maize after training and if you want a little extra kick, you could take 200mg or more of lipoic acid with the shake.

So that's the basics. For info on the best nutritional approach gaining muscle, read the following article...
