Hi Shujaat

I wouldn't recommend a single exercise to rely on to build muscle or get fit. You need several exercises and they have to be arranged according you your fitness goals. There are other exercises you can do at home...

You would probably want to do at least one exercise for back - pull ups, rows, etc, one for legs - like squats, lunges, etc, and possibly arm curls and triceps extensions for arms in addition to the push ups.

A buddy of mine does a website called turbulence training. It's probably the biggest training website in the world for bodyweight training that doesn't require weights and can be done anywhere, so it will give you lots of ideas for training. The owner, Craig Ballantyne, is also a thoroughly-qualified expert in exercise science, so you don't have to worry about his advice being dangerous or counter-productive.

As far as the quantity of push ups, I have no idea what your abilities are but you could start with 3 sets of 10 repetitions twice per week and then add two reps per set each week. Once you get to 20 reps, you could increase the resistance by adding weight to your back...just put an object that will balance on your back that will balance that weighs about ten or twenty pounds and progress the reps up again until it's time to increase the resistance again.

You definitely don't want to only do one exercise as Mark says, push ups only work your chest, triceps and core, leaving a lot of your body untouched. Training doesn't have to last long if you work hard enough. Rather than explain loads of exercises and training types it's easier to just suggest this book that I highly recommend - "You are your own gym". I use it myself; it has tons of body weight exercises, some great workout types to target all types of fitness (strength, endurance, power etc), helps you plan your own routines, gives some fairly good nutrition advice (though there's more you could learn from Fitness Inventor) and the workouts are tough yet quick and effective. I workout at home myself and little time available, but I love training at home with body weight exercises. To add resistance to most exercises you can just load up a backpack with anything (books, water bottles, sandbag etc) so don't worry about not having equipment, plus it gives you ways to make each exercise much harder. In terms of getting bigger muscles, you really are going to have to look into improving your diet, but training is a good start.

Ask a Royal marine if push ups work as its the building block of Commando Training 200 a day is common.
you will never believe how many you can do in a week.
