How can I improve the strength in my lower back?

I have injured my lower back and have been having physio for a 'sacroiliac joint sprain' for the past 2 weeks.
I have only been shown 1 exercise to continue at home which is muscle clenching of my lower back - is there anything else I can try to A) ease the pain B) get my body moving as I feel like my back seizes in one position and C) prevent it happening again?

I did the injury whilst exercising - sitting on the floor and stretching to touch my toes and felt a very big 'ouch'

Helen,

In my experience, backs "go" like that when there is some imbalance of something tight and something weak.
Tight muscles to look for are hamstrings, piriformus, and lower back muscles. It's a good start.
A progressive exercise to do would be lying face down on a swiss ball and lifting your legs straight from your hips. This stabilizes the lower back and let's the muscles slide..
