Could too many protein shakes interfere with the respiratory system?

Causing signs of breathlessness? and a sense of not being able to get a full breath.

Hi Matthew,

I'm very concerned about your symptoms. Are you experiencing them now? Not being able to breathe normally is very disconcerting and I think that you need to see your doctor or go to the ED right away.

If the symptoms seemed to start when you started the protein shakes, you might be allergic to one of the ingredients in the shake; but I really think that rather than trying to make assumptions or guessing about what might be the cause of your symptoms, you really should get medical follow up and be evaulated by a physician.

Best of luck!

Hi Matthew

I've never heard of a protein shake interfering with respiration but as Lauren has alluded to, it sounds like it could be some kind of allergic reaction, which could possibly be the result of a milk, egg or soy ingredient in a protein shake or perhaps some other ingredient. Either way, if you are having difficulty breathing, as Lauren says, go to the Emergency Department.

If it is only mild discomfort or a bit of wheezing, discontinue the shakes and see if it goes away. Then you could gradually start taking a very small serving, which you very gradually increase every day and keep a very close eye on symptoms and this may reveal whether it is the protein shake or some other food or environmental influence that is causing you this problem.

Hello Matthew,

99% of me is saying its probably nothing to do with the whey protein. But I was wondering whether or not the high protein intake might affect your plasma/blood albumin and that is someway causing some pulmonary oedema?

I do think you should see a doctor about these symptoms. Breathlessness is not something to take lightly.
